Jovino Santos Neto
Three time Latin Grammy-nominated pianist and composer, Jovino Santos Neto, and woodwind master, Hans Teuber, have been friends for a long time. For many years they have been part of the esteemed musical faculty of Seattle’s prestigious, Cornish School for the Arts. Over the years, they’ve played lots of music together, but it had been a long time since they’ve recorded together. When London Tone Music approached Jovino about recording a track for 52x52, we asked him to think about someone he might like to collaborate with for his track and he immediately zeroed in on his friend, Hans, as the perfect choice to add the music and integrity that his composition, Illuminado, called for. It is a lively and beautiful track that highlights the marvelous interplay between Jovino’s delicate and delightful piano and Hans’ playful melody lines on the arsenal of woodwinds Hans brought to the session. The result is the kind of musical magic that only two friends, who know each other well, both musically and personally, can achieve. Here is a deeper look at who Jovino and Hans are:
Jovino Santos Neto
Three-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto, a master pianist, composer and arranger, is among the top Brazilian musicians working today. Currently based in Seattle, Washington, he has throughout his career been closely affiliated with the Brazilian master Hermeto Pascoal. He was an integral part of Pascoal's group from 1977 to1992, where he fine-tuned his artistry, performing around the world and co-producing several legendary records. Jovino’s personal style is a creative blend of energetic grooves, deep harmonies, telepathic improvisation, lyrical melodies and great ensemble playing, always inspired and informed by the colorful richness of Brazilian music. His compositions includesamba, choro, baião, xote, forró, marcha and many more styles, rooted in centuries-old musical tradition while pointing to new and adventurous harmonic languages. Currently, Jovino leads his Seattle-based Quinteto and teaches piano and composition at Cornish College of the Arts. Hans Teuber
The son of professional musicians, Hans Teuber has spent his entire life making music. In South Carolina Teuber grew up singing in his mother’s church choir, playing in bands and orchestras, as well as jazz and R&B groups. As a youngster he performed with Dizzy Gillespie and local be-bop, funk, and jazz artists.
Teuber left South Carolina in the mid 1980s and toured extensively with jazz pianist Buddy Greco. He made Seattle his home in 1988. Since then he has recorded and performed with Julian Priester, Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, Robin Holcomb, Chuck Deardorf, Dave Peterson, Jovino Santos Neto‘s Quinteto, and Pearl Jam, among others. In New York, Teuber has recorded with Kendra Shank, Frank Kimbrough, Jeff Johnson, Victor Lewis, Joe Locke, Billy Mintz, Peck Allmond, and trumpeter Todd Horton’s Whatsa. He also spent three years on the road and in the studio recording with songwriter Ani DiFranco culminating with a European tour opening for Maceo Parker.
Teuber is currently performing in Seattle with Teatro Zinzanni (as Musical Director), Stone Gossards’ Hank Williams Choir, and his own trio. He has released two CDs under his own name, Lucky on Origin Arts and Looky on Jackson Street Records. Teuber can also be heard on the Deardorf/Peterson project Portal and bassist Jeff Johnson’s recent release Tall Stranger/ both on the Origin label. …From Cornish School for the Arts
